OVERSTATEMENT/OVERSTEINUNN: Expressions of Expectations is an on-going solo project by Icelandic choreographer Steinunn Ketilsdóttir. In the work she expresses and exposes the expectations of the performance and the performer through a series of articulated and embodied statements. The project emerged from her struggle to explain her artistic works and visions in academic and institutional settings. Faced with the challenge she decided to fulfil expectations, her own and others, by over-explaining and over-expressing herself in an attempt to convey her multiplicity. Steinunn has many expectations of what this project will be or not be. What it might be or might not be. What it should be and what it should not be. Since the initiation of the project she has made sixteen public statements, Statement #1 thru #16, and will continue to make statements until it is enough.
Steinunn Ketilsdóttir is an Icelandic choreographer based in Reykjavík. In 2005 she graduated with a BA in Dance from Hunter College, NY. In 2016 she graduated with a Master in Performance Studies from NYU Tisch School of Arts. In 2002, she earned a BSc. in Business Administration from Reykjavík University.
Steinunn has worked internationally throughout her career both independently and in collaboration with other artists, creating a number of works that have been shown across Europe and in New York. From 2007 she collaborated with choreographer Brian Gerke under the name Steinunn and Brian. Steinunn also collaborates with Icelandic choreographer Sveinbjörg Þórhallsdóttir.
Steinunn has been nominated for the Icelandic Theater Awards for her works and collaborations and in 2010 she was awarded for both performance and choreography for her solo Superhero. Upon graduation at the Tisch School of the Arts she was awarded the coveted Performance Studies Award.
Steinunn has been a guest teacher and faculty member at the Performing Arts Department of the Iceland Academy of the Arts since 2007. Throughout her career she has been an active member of the independent dance scene in Iceland and involved in the development of Reykjavík Dance Festival and the founding of Dance Atelier – Workspace for Choreographers.
Steinunn is currently developing and presenting her ongoing solo project, OVERSTATEMENT/OVERSTEINUNN: Expressions of Expectations and working on the choreographic research project EXPRESSIONS: the power and politics of expectations in dance.
