SITE SEPCIFIC PERFORMANCE
As a viewing experience, Non-Linear can be referred to as a visit to an art exhibition. In this production, static pictures have been replaced by movement events which the viewer is free to observe in the order that they choose.
Non-Linear reaches also wider audience that is interested in architecturally exciting (temporarily used) spaces as well as site specific contemporary art. The viewing direction of stages is not predefined. Instead, the choreography is designed so that events can be observed from multiple angles. Starting and ending sequences are designed according to its own logic; as if an invisible thread connected the stages allowing communication across the space.
Structure of the work is based on spatial coexistence and temporal layering of five to six performance stages. During the performance the audience is free to stroll around the venue. With the dancers, the work creates “loops”, which begin and fade out, repeating the movement at certain intervals. Each stage, or choreographic “painting” if you wish, is precise in its form. The work is possible to carry out with 12 to 6 dancers and 6 to 5 stages.
Non-Linear has been formed via two earlier productions: Non-Linear – Jätkäsaari in Jätkäsaari stockhouse (1st Oct 2015, Finland), and Non-Linear – Dance Mass in Suvilahti Kattilahalli (14th Mar 2014, Finland).
The origin of Non-Linear site specific contemporary dance project can be traced to a “mother” piece Closer to the heart at The Full Moon Dance Festival, 21st July 2012.
